a cold winter unlike any other before it stretches across hoenn, and mika finds themself longing for a wintry experience. the safari zone provides it, and together with three of her pokemon, mika enjoys the dazzling snow-covered fields and chilly air. with a scarf around their neck, they nod at komainu, and at mamoru and elio who lag behind. SAFARI ZONE

a delibird! mika has a few fond memories of this pokemon, vague scenes from her childhood replaying in the back of her mind. and even if not, they consider the fact that a courier pokemon could be quite useful, especially as a ranger. [break][break]

a brief scuffle with her blaziken is enough to almost knock out the delibird, and mika catches it while it's weakened, smiling to themself at their newest acquisition. [break][break]

mika spots a staryu waddling along a frozen pond. though cute, she has no need for the star-shaped pokemon on her team right now — indicating as such to her pokemon with a shake of their head. [break][break]

"here's some food. let's take a break over there." she passes out snacks, and lycanroc, lucario, and blaziken follow their trainer to an icy clearing, where they rest on a waterproof picnic blanket over the frozen grass. [break][break]

while they're eating, mika keeps a watchful eye on any other pokemon that might come into their area, curious. [break][break]

her lycanroc growls suddenly, sensing a new threat. mika turns her head in the direction of the new presence, and spots a burmy hanging from a frozen tree across from them. she turns to komainu and smiles gently. "thank you for alerting me, but it's alright. we can leave that burmy alone for now." [break][break]

and the rest of her pokemon enjoy their break. the cold air around them settles, diamond dust glittering in the sky. mika brushes light snowfall off of her hair and nose, and stands up. "time to go." her lucario and blaziken help pick up the blanket and the other items scattered around for their makeshift picnic. mika packs it all up, puts their hood up to cover their head, and ventures further into the safari zone. [break][break]

in the snowbank up ahead, mika sees a moving shape, and realizes what it is based on how seamlessly it blends into the white surroundings. [break][break]

"that's the galarian version of darumaka, isn't it?" the metaphorical question is posed to her pokemon, the three of them not native to galar, but understanding the presence of a variant pokemon when they see it. "elio, komainu. let's bring it home." [break][break]

the wolf and the avian pokemon dash forth. elio uses his flames to weaken the galarian darumaka, while komainu collects the thing in its mouth, securing its fate as it retrieves the ice-type pokemon to its trainer. [break][break]

only when she's caught it in a safari ball and re-summoned it again, does she realize something. [break][break]

"oh my goodness," they say with unfiltered glee. "you're shiny." [break][break]

with all the excitement and energy coming from mika and their newly acquired galarian darumaka, it would seem that the latter isn't the only pokemon who's come out to play. [break][break]

another white pokemon waddles towards the ranger and her pokemon, laughing and giggling only to be picked up like a sack of potatoes by elio the blaziken. the fire-type pokemon shows off the wild entity to its trainer, and mika blinks owlishly at the largeness of this cetoddle. [break][break]

"you are very cute..." mika mutters. "don't let anyone know this, but i do like cute pokemon as well..." and she catches the cetoddle, for fear it might not survive on its for long — even if this is the safari zone. [break][break]

there won't be much time left, considering how long the ranger and their pokemon have been in here. what a fruitful safari zone expedition this is turning out to be, though! [break][break]

halfway through mika's return to the safari zone entrance, she spots something beautiful and elegant wading through ice-cold water, the parts of the pond that haven't yet frozen over. [break][break]

a lapras, wild and free, gently paddles through the water. mika has always wanted a lapras for herself, and she figures that while she's here she might as well make that dream come true... [break][break]

she makes the capture as painless as possible, as in she strikes the turtle pokemon from behind, wincing at the pained noise it makes upon being hit. [break][break]

but the poke ball snaps shut, and mika holds the thing to her chest, precious and loving. "you won't regret this," she promises her new catch. "let's go home." [break][break]
